TOEFL IBT Speaking Practice #85

Task 1

The question:

Would you rather spend your leisure time indoors (e.g., reading or watching TV) or outdoors (e.g., playing sports or hiking)? Explain why.

My Answer:

I would prefer spend my time Outdoors rather than in indoors.  not only because I spend the most of my time in front of my computer which is indoor activity but also if I play outdoors with my children my children absolutely will love it.  I have an experience I bring my children go to the mall and felt my children not so happy but on the other day we go to the beach and my children really happy and of course obviously I will happy as well.

ChatGPT Assessment, based on TOEFL iBT rubrics in scale out of 10 for each rubric (Delivery, Language Use, Topic Development):

Based on your response, here's an assessment according to TOEFL iBT rubrics:

**Delivery:** 9/10 - Your delivery was quite good. You spoke clearly and were easy to understand, with minor issues that did not significantly impede understanding.

**Language Use:** 8/10 - Your use of language was effective, though there were a few grammatical errors, such as "I would prefer spend my time" (should be "I would prefer spending my time") and "bring my children go to the mall" (should be "I took my children to the mall"). However, these errors did not impede overall comprehension.

**Topic Development:** 9/10 - You did a good job developing the topic. You provided personal experiences to support your preference for outdoor activities, which made your argument more convincing. There was a clear progression of ideas, but it could be enhanced with additional examples or detailed explanations of why outdoor activities make you and your children happy.

Please remember that this is a hypothetical score and may not reflect the exact grading you would receive in a real TOEFL examination. However, it should give you a good idea of areas where you can improve.

Task 2

Reading Passage:

The University's Executive Board recently convened to discuss an energy-saving measure proposed by the Sustainability Committee. After careful evaluation, the proposal to shift to a four-day class schedule from the conventional five-day schedule was accepted in principle. The Board emphasized that this change is designed to significantly reduce energy costs, as the university would remain closed for an extra day, thus conserving energy. They also mentioned that, besides energy conservation, this measure could potentially enhance the student’s academic performance, as they would get an extra day to self-study and engage in research.

Listening Passage:

Person A: "Did you hear about the new four-day class schedule?"

Person B: "Yes, I did. I think it's a great idea! We could really use that extra day off for self-study and research. Plus, I'm all in for any steps towards sustainability."

Person A: "But, don't you think it might make our individual class times longer? I'm worried that could lead to more fatigue."

Person B: "Hmm, that's a valid point. But I think the faculty might adjust the lecture durations accordingly. Plus, the prospect of a long weekend is quite appealing, isn't it?"

Person A: "Yes, that's true. And an additional day off could indeed help in cutting down energy costs and carbon emissions."

The question:

Based on the reading passage and the conversation, what are the potential benefits and concerns related to the proposed four-day class schedule at the university? Use details from both the reading passage and the conversation in your response.

My Answer:

The Cowboys has a plan to do for the study day in the campus in order to cut the energy cost and all and also provides students to more self-study and spend more time on research.  from the conversation it seems the person  B greatly agree with the plan because she think that research will take a many times and of course she she agree about the campaign of sustainability.  however the  person A has a challenge how about the fact of the students since it's on the 4 days it must be the the class will be longer and the student we said that the lecture of should be adjust my faculty find better solution for this

ChatGPT Assessment, based on TOEFL iBT rubrics in scale out of 10 for each rubric (Delivery, Language Use, Topic Development):

Based on your response, here's an assessment according to TOEFL iBT rubrics:

**Delivery:** 7/10 - Your speech is mostly clear with occasional lapses in pronunciation and pace which might impede understanding. Pay attention to fluency and rhythm to enhance your delivery.

**Language Use:** 6/10 - There are some grammatical errors and confusing word choices throughout the response. For instance, "The Cowboys has a plan" is unclear and irrelevant to the context, "person B greatly agree with the plan" should be "Person B greatly agrees with the plan" and "the student we said that the lecture of should be adjust my faculty find better solution for this" is quite difficult to understand. Your language use could be improved with more attention to grammar and sentence structure.

**Topic Development:** 8/10 - You demonstrated a good understanding of the main points from both the reading and listening passages. You identified the main benefits and concerns discussed. However, there were some confusions in conveying your understanding of the details. Your response could have been more organized and coherent, with better transitions between ideas.

Again, this is a hypothetical score and may not reflect the exact grading you would receive in a real TOEFL examination. It is meant to provide guidance on where to focus your efforts for improvement.

Task 3

Reading Passage:

Quantum mechanics, the science that explains the behavior of matter and light at the atomic and subatomic level, has revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. It asserts that particles can exist in multiple states simultaneously, known as superposition, and can also affect each other instantaneously, no matter the distance, through quantum entanglement. These concepts defy conventional logic and the predictable patterns of classical physics, posing fascinating paradoxes that have become central to the ongoing discourse in modern theoretical physics.

Listening Passage:

Today, we delve deeper into the realm of quantum mechanics. As we've read, this branch of physics explores phenomena that elude classical physics' explanations.

Let's start with superposition. This principle suggests that particles don't have definite states until they're measured. Imagine a particle existing in multiple places at once, it’s an unsettling idea, isn’t it? But this phenomenon has been experimentally observed in atoms and even larger particles.

Now, let's discuss entanglement, arguably one of the most 'spooky' aspects of quantum mechanics, as Einstein put it. When particles become entangled, the state of one particle instantly influences the other, irrespective of the distance between them. This immediate connection has been verified in numerous experiments, suggesting the potential for quantum computing and secure communication.

However, while these concepts are groundbreaking, they also pose challenges. Quantum mechanics goes against our everyday experiences and notions of reality. It's a world where particles can be in two places at once and communicate instantaneously over vast distances. It challenges our understanding of the universe and its fundamental workings.

The question:

Based on the lecture, explain the concepts of superposition and quantum entanglement in the context of quantum mechanics. How might these principles challenge our traditional understanding of the physical world?

My Answer:

According to the material and the professor the classic physics is countered by Quantum mechanic Theory because quantum mechanic has many paradoxes on it.  there are several concept about the quantum mechanic the most of reknown the first one is the superposition concept.  superposition is the mechanic or the quantum state has a multiple position simultaneously and actually it happened not only in atom but on larger materials.

secondly it's about the entanglement of quantum it's spooky according to the professor because it influence other particles despite it distant and this practice could improve our computer system and security

ChatGPT Assessment, based on TOEFL iBT rubrics in scale out of 10 for each rubric (Delivery, Language Use, Topic Development):

Based on your response, here's an assessment according to TOEFL iBT rubrics:

**Delivery:** 8/10 - Your speech is mostly clear with minor lapses in pronunciation and pace, but it does not significantly hinder understanding. Work on clarity and fluency to improve your delivery.

**Language Use:** 7/10 - Your language use is satisfactory, with minor grammatical errors, such as "the classic physics is countered by Quantum mechanic Theory" (should be "classical physics is challenged by Quantum Mechanics") and "there are several concept about the quantum mechanic the most of reknown the first one is the superposition concept" (should be "there are several concepts in Quantum Mechanics, one of the most renowned being superposition"). Aim for more accurate and complex language use for a better score.

**Topic Development:** 8/10 - You captured the key points from both the reading and listening passages, including the main concepts of superposition and quantum entanglement. However, the last part of the question, which asked how these principles challenge our traditional understanding of the physical world, wasn't adequately addressed. Try to fully answer the question for a better score.

Again, this is a hypothetical score and may not reflect the exact grading you would receive in a real TOEFL examination. It is meant to provide guidance on where to focus your efforts for improvement.

Task 4

Listening Passage:

"Good afternoon, everyone. Today we will delve into the profound influence of ancient Greek philosophers on contemporary society.

Let's begin with Socrates, a quintessential figure in ancient philosophy. Socrates, though left no writings, is known through the accounts of his students, particularly Plato. His method of questioning, now known as the Socratic Method, is extensively used today in various fields, from law to medicine, to promote critical thinking and to expose the contradictions in one's beliefs.

Now, let's move to Plato, a student of Socrates. Plato founded the Academy in Athens, which was the Western world's first institution of higher learning – and a model for universities as we know them today. His work 'The Republic' discusses justice and the character of a just city-state and the just man. These considerations form the basis for much of our political theory and our ideas of justice today.

Finally, we reach Aristotle, a student of Plato. Aristotle's comprehensive system of logic, known as Aristotelian logic, was the dominant form of logic until modern times. His ethics, particularly the concept of virtue ethics, still influences modern philosophical debate. Furthermore, his works encompassed almost all aspects of human knowledge at the time, from physics to politics, and laid the groundwork for empirical science.

In essence, these philosophers, along with many others, shaped the way we reason, think about morality, and understand the world around us. Their influence is deeply embedded in the various fields of modern knowledge, and their philosophical ideas continue to resonate within our societal constructs, helping us navigate our daily lives and the issues that we face."

The question:

"In what ways have the ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle influenced the methods of thinking, understanding, and reasoning in contemporary society?"

My Answer:

The lecture is talk about three  prominent philosopher in the past from the Greek, Socrates  Plato and Aristotle.   Socrates itself is the teacher of  Plato that influence in many aspect or one of them is the questioning method that use for today was for scientific research on finding on contradiction the theory and so on.  the next one is Plato has the High Learning System and concern about public Justice and it's influence our political theory until right now.  and the last one is Aristotle actually is the Plato student and has a large and future effect on empirical science.  all of them very influential for our life today
