TOEFL writing practice #9

Some people believe that the best way to learn a foreign language is to live in a country where that language is spoken. Others believe that it is better to learn a language in a classroom setting. Which do you think is more effective? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

my answer:

I would say live in a country that the language is spoken will give faster result to mastering foreign language. In general, it follow the theory of practice make perfect. I have two personal reason to support my opinion.

Firstly, I've heard from friends, not only one, at least two, raising kids in foreign country, can make the kids speak foreign language. The kids do not need attend any class to learn the language, simply because they practice everyday. Even if their parents speak their mother tongue language, the kids will get used to listen and speak the language where the family live.

The next reason is the culture of foreign country. If we live in foreign country, obviously we see and live with the culture. This adaptation processes improve our logic to understand the language. Sitting in a classroom, perhaps we know the vocabs, structure, grammar, and so on. But because we don't know the culture of the country, we could fall into miss used of the language. Additionally, I heard theory of communication, that verbal speak not so significant impact to good communication, gesture and expression are. By knowing the culture of the country, the way native speaks, the way native people communicate, it will accelerate our learning process.

So, I believe go abroad and leave your country is the most effective way to learn foreign country. However, of course enrolling a class is needed to set the basic knowledge before we go to the real world. Perhaps 1-2 months of class will good enough before we go to foreign country. To be note, this opinion is for mastering foreign language in general views, if the case is for academic or bilateral formal connection, my opinion could be different.

ChatGPT assessment:

Your response is well-organized and effectively argues in favor of living in a foreign country to learn a new language. However, there are some areas that could use improvement.

Firstly, there are some grammatical errors, such as "miss used" instead of "misuse," and "foreign country" instead of "foreign language." Additionally, some sentences are a bit choppy and could be combined to make the response flow more smoothly.

Furthermore, while you provide personal examples to support your argument, more specific examples and evidence could have strengthened your response even further. For instance, you could have cited studies or research on language acquisition to back up your claims.

Overall, I would rate your response a 24 out of 30. Your writing demonstrates a clear understanding of the prompt and effectively presents your opinion, but could benefit from additional development and refinement.
